(b Mellenbach, 21 March 1703; d Lobenstein, 4 April 1778). German composer. He was court and civic organist at Lobenstein from 19 and became famous as a writer and keyboard composer. An authority on organ building, he wrote chiefly on tuning and temperament; he also published major treatises on composition (1745-7) and improvisation (1767), which have a forward-looking emphasis on harmony.
