(b Kassel, 23 Feb 1749; d Tallinn, 20 Jan 1833). German soprano. After singing in Hiller's Leipzig concerts, she served in the Berlin opera, 1771-9, marrying the cellist Mara. Later she appeared in Germany, Italy and elsewhere, but was most successful in London (1784-1802), especially in concerts and oratorios: she was a bravura singer, noted for her sound technique, beautiful tone and professional high-handedness.
