Dictionary of Dance: Gertrud Kraus

Kraus, Gertrud (b Vienna, 6 May 1903, d Tel Aviv, 22 Nov. 1977). Austrian-Israeli dancer, choreographer, and teacher. She studied at the Vienna State Academy and between 1928 and 1950 she performed recitals of her own expressionist choreography in Europe and Israel, both alone and with her group. In 1935 she founded the Gertrud Kraus Dance Company in Israel, and also ran her own school, based in Tel Aviv (1935-73). Many of the country's best-known dancers trained with her. In her later years she was also active as a painter and sculptor.
