Biography

Born Gisele Lafleche in Winnipeg, Canada, Gisele MacKenzie was known for her pop/rock hits "Hard to Get" and "Pepper-Hot Baby." She was a regular vocalist on Your Hit Parade from 1953-57. Her musical and acting career took her from recording studios, to radio stations, to television and to the stage.

Gisele Lafleche learned to play the violin and piano as she was growing up in Winnipeg. Along with her singing ability, learning to play instruments made her more marketable. When she married, she adopted her husband's last name, making her Gisele MacKenzie. She received her first professional job playing in the Bob Shuttleworth Band; Shuttleworth later became MacKenzie's manager.

Her musical career took off in the late 1940s when she got her own radio show on the Canadian Broadcast Channel. It was not until 1955 that she recorded "Hard to Get" and "Pepper-Hot Baby," both minor hits. Her first four albums -- Gisele MacKenzie, Mam'selle Gisele, Christmas With Gisele and Gisele -- were released on the Vik label, a division of RCA Records. Hard to Get: The Best of Gisele MacKenzie is an anthology devoted to the songs she recorded while at RCA. Also on the RCA label is a series of children's albums she produced for the Cricket Playhour.

In 1957, Gisele MacKenzie began her own television program on NBC, which lasted only one season. Her television career had started in 1950 when she made an appearance on The Jack Benny Program, shortly after appearing as a regular vocalist on Your Hit Parade. It was not until 1963 that she reappeared on ABC's The Sid Caesar Show. singing a song each week and sometimes playing Sid Caesar's fourth wife.

In the early '60s, MacKenzie released three albums -- Gisele MacKenzie At the Empire Room of the Waldorf Astoria, Gisele MacKenzie Sings Lullaby and Goodnight, and Losers' Lullabies -- and later toured the United States. She sang in nightclubs and performed the lead vocals in such musicals as The King and I, South Pacific, Hello Dolly and The Unsinkable Molly Brown.

Gisele MacKenzie made a television "comeback" in the 1980s when she made guest appearances on MacGyver and Murder She Wrote. She never lost her interest in singing while pursuing an acting career and in 1996 wrote an anthem to the city of Los Angeles called "My City, L.A.," which proved quite popular in the city. MacKenzie was diagnosed with cancer a few years later and finally succumbed early in September of 2003. ~ Kim Summers, All Music Guide

Biography

Widely recognized due to her popular appearances on the 1950s television sensation Your Hit Parade and her very own NBC variety series, singer/actress Gisele MacKenzie's popularity surged with the release of her 1955 hit single "Hard to Get," which remained on the charts for 16 weeks. A Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, native whose parents immediately recognized her natural talent when she began playing piano at age two, it wasn't long before young MacKenzie was playing the violin and exercising her vocal chords as well. MacKenzie later trained at the Toronto's Royal Conservatory of Music before entertaining troops during World War II. It was while there that MacKenzie met Royal Canadian Navy man and bandleader Robert Shuttleworth, the man who would soon integrate her into his civilian band in addition to becoming her first manager and future husband. Her radio show Meet Giselle caught the attention of some vacationing radio scouts who immediately passed her name to Hollywood radio figure Bob Crosby, and by 1951 the emerging songstress was a regular on Crosby's popular Club 15 show as well as a featured performer on The Mario Lanza Show. It was also during this time that MacKenzie would simultaneously record songs for Capitol Records and appear in numerous popular Las Vegas acts. After catching the eye of Jack Benny while performing in Sin City, she became a regular on The Jack Benny Show, which was the exposure that eventually led her to a five-year stint on Your Hit Parade, where she would perform the seven most popular songs in the nation each week. It was during this time that MacKenzie recorded her own hit, "Hard to Get." In addition to her radio and television work, MacKenzie also found time to appear in film and regional theater. On-stage she would find success in such musical productions as The King and I and Hello, Dolly!, with an appearance in the 1972 mystery One Minute Before Death providing audiences with unexpected chills. In her later years MacKenzie would appear in such popular television shows as Crazy Like a Fox and Boy Meets World. In early September of 2003, Gisele MacKenzie died in Burbank, CA, of colon cancer. She was 76. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Gisèle MacKenzie (January 10, 1927–September 5, 2003) was a Canadian-American singer, most famous for her performances on the popular television program Your Hit Parade.

She was born Gisèle Marie-Louise Marguerite LaFlèche in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and studied violin and voice at The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, Ontario. She had her own Canadian Broadcasting Corporation radio program, Meet Gisèle, before moving to Los Angeles, California in 1951. She became a naturalized US citizen in 1955.

MacKenzie possessed a crystalline, resonant singing voice. She had perfect pitch. It has been said that she was one of the greatest female vocalists of her generation. She recorded albums and 45rpm singles on various record labels, most notably Capitol and RCA. Her biggest selling song was "Hard To Get" in 1955.

MacKenzie was an accomplished violinist and performed many comedic musical duets with mentor Jack Benny. She remarked that Benny was so enthusiastic about his own violin playing that at each break in rehearsal he would get his violin and they'd play duets. In an often-played clip, she and Benny perform a violin duet of Getting To Know You, in which she breaks their synchronization several times to add some extra musical flourishes, to his mock irritation. Finally, he breaks in with a lengthy (and stereotypically mediocre) flourish of his own, and evokes audience laughter with mock indignation: "Fool around with ME, sister!"

She sang frequently on early television shows such as The Jack Benny Program, The Dinah Shore Chevy Show, and The Ed Sullivan Show. She appeared often at Las Vegas venues and in numerous North America concerts.

In the U.S., she appeared on radio on such stars' programs as Bob Crosby and Mario Lanza. She also hosted a radio show entitled Airtime.

In 1952 and 1953 she toured with Benny, who recommended her for Your Hit Parade. During her tenure on that show, "Hard to Get" became a hit. MacKenzie appeared on the show for several years, finally leaving in 1957 to head her own short-lived variety program, The Gisele MacKenzie Show. She returned to television in 1963 on The Sid Caesar Show and was a panelist on many quiz programs.

In later years MacKenzie performed widely in musical theater in such shows as Mame, Gypsy, The Sound of Music, and Hello, Dolly! She turned to acting in the 1990s, making guest appearances on television series including Murder, She Wrote and MacGyver.

MacKenzie has a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame at 1601 Vine.

She died from colon cancer, aged 76, in 2003. Her daughter is contemporary jazz artist Gigi MacKenzie.
