Biography

For decades, Gloria Loring has been recording songs and performing on tour. Her versatile singing voice has made her a legend in pop music. Her media credits include stage, television and radio, as well as co-writing the themes for Diff'rent Strokes and The Facts of Life.

Gloria Loring began her professional singing career at the age of 14 with the '60s folk group Those Four. She made her acting debut when she appeared on The Merv Griffin Show. This led to many singing spots on different television and talk and variety shows, including The Tonight Show, The Ed Sullivan Show and The Carol Burnett Show, as well as performances on the Emmy and Academy Awards.

In 1970, Loring married television star Alan Thicke. The union produced two sons, Brennan and Robin. She and Thicke divorced in 1983. While the children were young, Gloria Loring spent much of her time writing songs, including theme songs for television shows. Her song "What've You Got to Lose," co-written with Eric Kaz, was used in the film Inside Moves. With appearances on television variety shows and an excellent singing voice, Loring decided to pursue and acting career. In 1980, she landed the role of Liz Chandler on the daytime soap opera Days of Our Lives, remaining there for six and a half years. Her popular song "Friends and Lovers," performed with Carl Anderson, was performed on the show and became a massive hit.

Aside from her acting abilities, her singing talents have resulted in performances all over North America, in Europe and in Australia. She has performed with such musical/acting legends as Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Al Jarreau, Mel Tormé and the Pointer Sisters. During the late '80s and '90s, Gloria Loring's interests drifted toward the theater. She performed in Queen of the Soaps, Star Dust and the Tony Award-winning Music Minus One.

Gloria Loring continues to tour worldwide and more recently recorded "Is There Anybody Out There?" She is continually writing new songs and doing projects for charities, particularly the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. She lives in California with her husband, Rene Lagler, a production designer. ~ Kim Summers, All Music Guide

Life and career

Loring was born in New York City, New York, the daughter of Dorothy Ann (née Tobin), a singer, and Gerald Louis Goff, a salesman and trumpet player.[1] She began her music career at age 14, singing with a folk group known as Those Four. She went on to perform on a wide range of shows in the 70's, from The Carol Burnett Show to the Academy Awards ceremony.

Gloria Loring released her first album in 1968. It was titled "Today", also released as "Gloria Loring" on MGM Records.

Loring was married to actor Alan Thicke (Growing Pains) from 1970 until 1983, and they co-composed the theme songs to Diff'rent Strokes and The Facts of Life. The first season of Facts had the cast performing the theme, but the remainder of the run (1980-1988) featured Loring's rendition of the song which remains a strong memory for '80s sitcom devotees. There were two versions of the Facts of Life theme song that Loring sang. One version was used from seasons two through six and a second used from seasons seven to nine. The marriage produced two sons, Brennan and Robin. Robin started his own musical career as "Thicke"; he has recently achieved success under his full name as a "Neo-Soul" artist.

In 1980, Loring joined NBC daytime soap Days of our Lives as chanteuse Liz Chandler. The show was going through a dry spell at the time, with many veterans shown the door and many new faces alienating longtime fans. Of the nine new characters introduced in the 1980-1981 season, only Liz garnered a fan following, and was the only one to have her contract renewed. Loring briefly dated Don Diamont, the actor who played the corrupt, long-lost son of her TV husband Dr. Neil Curtis. (Diamont would go on to find daytime stardom on The Young and the Restless as Brad Carlton.)

In 1986, Loring scored a #2 Pop and #1 Adult Contemporary hit record in the United States with "Friends and Lovers," with Carl Anderson (also a #1 Country hit in 1986 for Eddie Rabbitt and Juice Newton under the title "Both to Each Other"). Loring had originally performed "Friends and Lovers" several times on the set of Days of our Lives dating back more than a year before the track would finally hit the charts. The tune had generated significant viewer interest, and spectators soon were asking for copies of the single. First officially recorded as a duet with Anderson (who would himself appear on the Days of our Lives set to sing the song with Loring) in 1985, the single would have to wait an entire year before its eventual 1986 release, due to legal hassles.[2] Loring left Days that same year and would only make sporadic film and television appearances over the next few decades. Her main efforts were spent in theater and in her recording career (though "Friends and Lovers" was her only major hit single). Upon learning her son Brennan had diabetes, Loring became a major fundraiser and advocate for diabetes research. In 1994, Loring married production designer Rene Lagler. They initially met 24 years earlier on the set of Glen Campbell's variety series. They met again on a plane in 1993, and Loring said she knew this was the man she was going to marry.

In 2003 Gloria released her first holiday album, You Make It Christmas. More recently Gloria has released "A Playlist" which includes a new recording of the song Friends and Lovers w/Carl Anderson. Gloria made this recording just one year before Carl Anderson became sick and died.

Loring is currently working on a "Best of" album, which will include songs from her first 3 albums. Today (aka Gloria Loring MGM), And Now We Come To Distances, and Sing a song for the Mountain.
