González, sometimes spelled Gonzales, is a family name that originated in Spain. In Spain, it is the second most common surname (only after García) with 2.08% of the population bearing the surname.[1] Within the United States, it is ranked as the 38th most common surname.[2]

Origin

González is of Spanish origin, and it means "son of Gonzalo".[3] Common spelling varations include: Gonzalez (without an acute mark), Gonzales, Gonzáles, and Gonzalés. The Portuguese spelling of the name is Gonçalves.
