In the Hindu (see Hinduism) Bhāgavata Purāṇa (see Purāṇas), Kṛṣṇa (see Kṛṣṇa) is a cowherd (gopā) and the cows are symbolic of love and devotion to Kṛṣṇa. The female cowherds or milkmaids are gopīs. Their erotic love for Kṛṣṇa is symbolic of devotion to the great avatar of Viṣṇu (see Viṣṇu, Avatars of Viṣṇu, Govinda).
