[Middle English, throat, from Old French, from Late Latin gurga, perhaps from Latin gurges, whirlpool, abyss.]
gorger gorg'er n.
verb
Definition: eat voraciously
Antonyms: abstain, diet, fast, nibble
A deep and narrow opening between upland areas, usually containing a river. Gorges, such as Cheddar Gorge in the UK, occur in karst scenery partly as a result of the collapse of caves. A further cause, as in the Elbe Gorge in Saxony, is when the downcutting power of the river is greater than the processes of valley-wall erosion. The latter may be less effective because the water permeates the side walls rather than flowing over and eroding them.
1. In some orders of columnar architecture, a narrow band around the shaft near the top, or forming part of the capital near the bottom; a fillet or narrow member which seems to divide the capital from the shaft.
2. A cavetto or hollow molding.
3. A narrow entry into a bastion.
The hikers had to cross the deep gorge by way of a swinging bridge.
