(1) Hardware that performs graphics processing tasks independently of the computer's CPU. See graphics accelerator and graphics coprocessor.

(2) Software that accepts commands from an application and builds images and text that are directed to the graphics driver and hardware. Macintosh's QuickDraw and Windows' GDI are examples.
