There are 18 groups in the standard periodic table. These groups are arranged vertically.
Elements in the same group behave similarly because they have the same number of electrons in its outermost shell.
Group 1 has one electron, group 2 has two, ect. However, most Transition Metals in groups 3 through 13 have two electrons.
Group 1- Alkali Metals (Lithium Family)
Group 2- Alkali Earth Metals (beryllium family)
Group 3- Scandium
Group 4- Titanium
Group 5- Vanadium
Group 6- Chromium
Group 7- Manganese
Group 8- Iron
Group 9- Cobalt
Group 10- Nickel
Group 11- Copper
Group 12- Zinc
Group 13- Boron
Group 14- Carbon
Group 15- Nitrogen
Group 16- oxygen
Group 17- Halogens
Group 18- Nobel Gases
