In law, one who has, or is legally appointed to, the care and management of another, usually a minor. A natural guardian is a guardian by natural relationship (usually the father or mother). A guardian may be appointed by the court when it decides that a child needs one (usually when the parents have died or disappeared).

An individual who has been given the legal responsibility to care for a child or adult who is incapable of taking care of themselves due to age or lack of capacity. The appointed individual is often responsible for both the care of the ward (the child or incapable adult) and their affairs.

Also referred to as a "conservator" when referring to an adult in need of care.

The guardian is usually either named or appointed in a will or in a court of law by a judge. A parent will often name a guardian to his or her children in the event of the parent's death or inability to provide for the children.

Individual who has the legal right to care for another person as a parent or to act as an administrator of the assets of a person declared incompetent for mental or physical reasons. Guardians can be testamentary, meaning appointed in a parent's will; general, meaning having the general responsibility to care for another person and that person's estate; or special, meaning the guardian has limited authority, such as half the responsibility of a general guardian but not the other.

One appointed by a court to administer the personal affairs or property of an individual who is not capable of such duties.
Example: The guardian of an orphan Minor signs a Deed to sell property inherited by the minor, to pay the minor's educational expenses.
