Review: Overall

2D fighting games are pretty hard to pull off on the PlayStation. The reason is that there's just not enough power to move all the pixel animation that is needed. This is why a lot of 2D fighters wind up butchered when they come to the PlayStation. But that didn't stop Japanese based Team Neo Blood from trying. Guilty Gear is their attempt and not only did they pull off creating a 2D fighter with fluid animation, but it's a darn good game as well.

You get to choose from 10 different characters in Guilty Gear, each with his or her own set of moves and special attacks. Moves are carried out in typical fighting game style (button combinations) and the game handles very well. All the characters are pretty much balanced and fair except some moves are a bit too excessive. A few characters can execute attacks that really take off way too much damage and this is real the problem with the game. As for the characters themselves, superb is the only way to describe them. Not only are they animated wonderfully, but they look great as well. Each one is diverse looking and has their own unique fighting stance. They are all pretty original in their own ways which is a definite plus. And while you are playing the game with the character of your choice, you will notice a bar on the lower portion of the screen. This is the "rage" meter which is very similar to the bar in Samurai Showdown. Whenever your character gets hit or takes damage, the meter begins to fill up. When it becomes full, your character will become stronger and enraged, allowing you to dish out a serious beating. This aspect is one of the reasons why fighting is so good in Guilty Gear. It's extremely challenging, fast and furious! And when I say extremely challenging, I mean just that and it shouldn't be taken lightly. The AI in this game is rough and harsh and the computer will destroy you a lot. And at times, it can get very frustrating. But this is what the good fighters are made of; they're not supposed to be easy.

There's not much else to say about this game. Guilty Gear is just a solid, well executed 2D fighting game that has class, personality and a great engine. This game will appeal to anyone remotely interested in fighting games and will really excite those hardcore fighting fanatics. Just don't expect to whip through it in one night because it's very difficult. Good job, Team Neo Blood!!

Review: Graphics

The character animation is very nice and the fighters are all very detailed and look great. There is also some really good movie sequences that really make this game shine.

Review: Sound

Unfortunately, the sound is very unoriginal. Its all pretty much by-the-book sound effects with no innovation whatsoever.

Review: Replay Value

This game will have you hooked for a while as you try to master all the combos and moves that it has to offer. It also has a two player feature which really adds to the replay value.

Review: Documentation

The manual is decent. It explains everything you need to know from pulling off moves to character backgrounds.

Guilty Gear (ギルティギア Giruti Gia?), subtitled The Missing Link, is the first game of the Guilty Gear series developed by Arc System Works. It was first released on the PlayStation in 1998.

Despite being the first release of the Guilty Gear franchise, the game itself reveals little of its past storyline; it is not until later releases of the video games, drama CDs, and novels of the franchise that its history is thoroughly explained.

Contents

Gameplay

Guilty Gear is set in 2D, similar to Street Fighter and The King of Fighters, but is fast-paced and focuses more on the use of combo techniques. The game features 10 characters and 3 hidden characters. It uses a 6 button layout: Punch, Kick, Slash, H-Slash, Dust and Respect. Combat is one-on-one set in best-two-out-of-three rounds.

It uses a 'tension' gauge, akin to Street Fighter Alpha's Super Combo techniques, in which characters can input certain commands and activate special-moves called Chaos Attacks. It also features an air-combo system, comparable to Marvel vs. Capcom's "Aerial Rave", allowing combos to be performed on airborne opponents.

Guilty Gear features instant kill techniques called Destroy Attacks, that can be activated after a Murder Outbreak attack successfully lands on an opponent, effectively ending the round.

The game also has a feature called Chaos Mode that is activated when a character's health is at the half-way point (yellow bar). A red aura will surround the character and he/she is able to perform unlimited Chaos Attacks.

Story

Guilty Gear follows the story of ten combatants entering "The Second Sacred Order Tournament" for reasons of their own. Set in a bleak future in which its present time has just recovered from a 100-year-war against man-made bio-organic weapons called "Gears". A Gear named Testament began a plan to resurrect Justice and wipe out the human race.

Fearing this, the Union of Nations began a fighting tournament in order to find fighters who would be able to defeat Testament and the coming revival of Justice, giving the winner the prize of being able to acquire anything they desire.

As the combatants fight through the stages of the tournament they begin to find out the true meaning of the tournament. After defeating Testament in the second to last stage of the tournament, the character aids Justice's revival by being the sacrifice. After defeating the threat of Justice, order is restored with an uneasy peace.

Reception

Game Informer has named the game one of the top ten weirdest of all time.[1]
