Northwestern arm of the Arabian Sea, between the eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. It is about 200 mi (320 km) wide and 350 mi (560 km) long and connects with the Persian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz. It is the only entrance to the Persian Gulf from the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean and is important as a shipping route for the oil-producing area around the Persian Gulf.

The northwest arm of the Arabian Sea, measuring 350 miles (560 km) in length.

The Gulf of Oman forms the only entrance to the Persian Gulf from the Indian Ocean. It is bounded by Iran on the north, Oman on the south, and the United Arab Emirates on the west. The gulf is relatively shallow because of its origin as a fissure in the mountain spine now divided between Iran and Oman. Two hundred miles (320 km) wide at its outer limit, it narrows to 35 miles (56 km) at the Strait of Hormuz. Roughly one-third of the world's oil is exported via the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman. Iran's Revolutionary Guards attacked oil tankers in the waterway during the Iran - Iraq War but were never able to disrupt shipping. Environmental concerns have grown in recent years because of an increase in oil spills and the emptying of ballast by oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman before entering the strait.

Gulf of Oman
Persian Sea is an alternative name for the Gulf of Oman, as shown in this 18th century map by Eman Bowen.

The Gulf of Oman or Sea of Oman (Arabic: خليج عُمان‎ - Ḫalīdj ʾUmān; alternatively known as خليج مکران - Ḫalīdj Makrān, Gulf of Makran; in Persian also known as دریای ایران - Daryā-e Īrān, Iranian Sea, or دریای فارس - Daryā-e Fārs, Persian Sea) is a strait (and not an actual gulf) that connects the Arabian Sea with the Strait of Hormuz, which then runs to the Persian Gulf. It is generally included as a branch of the Persian Gulf, not as an arm of the Arabian Sea. On the north coast is Pakistan and Iran (Persia). On the south coast are Oman in the east, and the United Arab Emirates for a short distance in the west.
