Gusle

Single-string fiddle of Yugoslavia, in which the hollow resonator (covered with stretched skin) and the neck are carved together from one piece of wood, usually maple. It resembles a large spoon and can be oval, round, leaf-shaped or pear-shaped. The player, who sings to his own accompaniment, holds the instrument upright between his knees.
