n

Definition: rush, eruption
Antonyms: calm

A temporary increase in wind speed, lasting for a few seconds. A typical ratio of gust speed to wind speed in rural areas is 1.6 : 1, increasing to 2 : 1 in urban areas due to the effects of high buildings and narrow streets.

Gusts may also be associated with heavy rain, as downdraughts sweep eastwards from cumulo-nimbus clouds. The repeated hammer blows of gusting winds do more damage than does the persistent pressure of steady wind.
