On drawings, abbr. for gypsum.

GYP (1849-1932) (pseud. of Sybille-Gabrielle Marie-Antoinette de Riquetti de Mirabeau, comtesse de Martel de Janville). French novelist. She began publishing in 1882, chiefly to earn money. She produced sketches for magazines, notably La Vie parisienne; plays, of which more than 20 were staged; numerous political articles, taking the anti- Dreyfus line; three autobiographical books; some art-criticism; and over 100 works of fiction. These were extremely poplar and frequently reprinted. Much of Gyp's fiction consists of dialogue novels, including both satirical and serious works. Some are mere pot-boilers but others, such as Bijou (1896), are well-constructed, carefully written, and worth critical attention. She was admired by readers as diverse as Nietzsche, Anatole France, and Henry James.
