Hackney Flashers

Hackney Flashers (1977-early 1980s). A collective of socialist and feminist documentary photographers based in Hackney, east London. It was an offshoot of the Photography Workshop, of which the pioneering documentary photographer Jo Spence was a founding member. The group's impetus came from a desire to engage politically and socially with the community in which they lived. Groundbreaking projects such as Women and Work highlighted the inequalities of women's work inside and outside the home, and Who's Holding the Baby? challenged the ideology of motherhood.
