(b Elberfeld, 12 March 1888; d Munich, 25 Oct 1965). German conductor. He studied at the Cologne Conservatory and was assistant to Richter and Siegfried Wagner at Bayreuth. He conducted at the Munich Opera from 1922, moving to Vienna in 1936 to work at the Staatsoper and with the Vienna PO. He often conducted Bruckner and at Bayreuth (from 1951) was noted for broadly conceived performances of Parsifal and the Ring.
