The source of water for the City of Toronto is Lake Ontario, and
since Toronto is built on the "side of a hill", it is necessary,
after treatment, to pump the water up from the lake, often several
times, before it can be delivered to the consumer. The water level
of Lake Ontario is about 75 metres above sea level (measured at the
Harbourmaster's Gauge in New York City) and the top ground
elevation in Toronto is about 133 m higher, at an elevation 270 m
above sea level, in the Keele Street-Steeles Avenue area.
