A term used to describe a plant that is able to survive freezing temperatures. Hardiness depends on geographic location, expressed in hardiness zones. Thus a perennial, shrub, or tree that is hardy in Zone 6 may not be hardy in Zone 5. Annual plants rated as hardy can be set out before the last frost. See also hardiness zones.
