Biography

The youngest of eight children, Harley Jane Kozak was born in Pennsylvania. Sadly, her father died just a year after she was born, prompting Kozak's mother to move the family to North Dakota, and later to Lincoln, NE, where Kozak would spend most of her childhood. Later deriving her stage name from the legendary Harley Davidson motorcycle series, Kozak made her on-stage debut at five-years-old, when she appeared in a college opera production of Dido and Aneas. Before finishing elementary school, she had landed a recurring role as a fifth grader on the educational TV show Music With Mrs. Kozak; she also joined the Nebraska Repertory Theater as a tap dancer by her junior year in high school.

After high school, Kozak moved to New York City, where she studied acting at the highly reputed NYU School of the Arts. After finishing her college studies, Kozak made her feature-film debut in The House on Sorority Row (1983), and landed a regular role on the long-running daytime soap Guiding Light before joining the cast of NBC's Santa Barbara. Her character met a sticky end, even for soap standards -- a neon letter "C" fell from a hotel marquee and crushed her to death. By the late '80s, Kozak had made a tiny appearance in a big film (1989's When Harry Met Sally with Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan); made a larger appearance in a supporting role on Parenthood (1989); and finally starred opposite Jeff Daniels in director Frank Marshall's horror comedy Arachnophobia (1990). Kozak showed her diversity in her following roles, which ranged from sports comedies (1991's Necessary Roughness) to action thrillers (The Taking of Beverly Hills, also 1991) to the sci-fi romance The Android Affair (1995). Kozak also portrayed a bored wife in The Favor (1994) with Brad Pitt, and despite the movie's lack off significant mainstream success, the actress was praised for her work in it. After starring in a variety of film and made-for-television feature roles, Kozak signed on for the ill-conceived ABC sitcom The Secret Lives of Men opposite Peter Gallagher in 1998. In 2004, she took a new turn professionally with the publication of her debut novel, Dating Dead Men. Kozak lives in California with her husband, two dogs, and a cat. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide

Life and career

Kozak was born Susan Jane Kozak in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Dorothy (née Taraldsen), a university music teacher, and Joseph Aloysius Kozak, an attorney.[1] She was raised in Nebraska and attended New York University.[2]

Kozak starred in movies such asThe Favor, Parenthood, When Harry Met Sally..., Arachnophobia, All I Want for Christmas and the soap operas Texas (first as a day player in October 1981, and from November 1981 to December 1982 as Brette Wheeler), Guiding Light (from 1983 to 1985 and a one day voice over in February 1990, as both Annabelle Sims Reardon and Annabelle's deceased mother, in 1983 flashbacks, Annie Sims) and Santa Barbara (from 1985 to 1986 and again in 1989, as former nun, Mary Duvall McCormick). Mary was probably the role Kozak is most known for. She was also one of the most beloved actressed of the whole show. Her character became famous when she died in an accident where a giant neon letter "C" fell on top of her.Viewers were so angry over Mary's death that they started a letter-writing campaign demanding for her reappearence. The show received so much mail (not to mention the ratings that dramatically fell) that eventually they admitted their mistake and asked Harley to come back. She refused since she was already working with other things and she kind of liked the idea what had happened to Mary. In February 1989 she made a brief return though, as an angel in Heaven where the love of Mary's life was allowed to see her.

Kozak was originally chosen to play Karen Sammler in the TV show Once and Again. She filmed the pilot, but withdrew from the series when she became pregnant with her first child. The role went to Susanna Thompson. Kozak also appeared in the 1st year episode "Cold Lazarus" of Stargate SG-1 as Sara O'Niell.

In 1993-1994, Kozak played Alison Hart, wife of Dave Hart, portrayed by Beau Bridges, on the CBS comedy/western series Harts of the West. The program was set on a dude ranch in Nevada. Lloyd Bridges played her father-in-law, and Diane Ladd appeared once as Alison's mother.

Kozak has written four novels: Dating Dead Men (2004), Dating Is Murder : A Novel (2005), Dead Ex (2007), and A Date You Can't Refuse (2008) all of which feature greeting card designer and amateur sleuth Wollie Shelley, a woman with very eccentric friends and family. The first three novels were published by Doubleday, a division of Random House, the most recent was published by Broadway Books following the demise of Doubelady. Dating Dead Men obtained an Agatha Award for best first novel in 2004.

Kozak lives in Agoura Hills, California. She has been married twice: a brief union in the early 1980s (1982-1983) and a second marriage from 1997-2007 to an entertainment lawyer Gregory Aldisert. She has three children: daughter Audrey Valentine (b. 9th of March 2000) and twins Lorenzo Robert and Giana Julia (born 30th of May 2002).
