Minimum heights for standing and sitting below deck
It’s unfortunate, from a yacht designer’s point of view, that humans are vertically oriented, whereas boats are horizontally oriented. If we were designed to carry ourselves more like the snake or the centipede, we would fit much more conveniently into the long, low shape of an efficient boat. It’s not until a boat approaches 27 feet (8.2 m) in length that it becomes possible to offer full standing headroom below without spoiling her looks and efficiency with a large and ugly deckhouse. The generally accepted definition of full standing headroom is 6 feet, 1 inch (1.85 m) clear beneath the deck beams or headliner. Clear sitting headroom on small boats is usually understood to be between 4 feet, 0 inch (1.22 m) and 4 feet, 9 inches (1.45 m). Anything more, but lacking full standing headroom, is an irritant because it constantly invites you to stand and hit your head.Standing headroom is not an important component of seaworthiness or sailing ability; rather, it’s the opposite. In any case, on an ocean passage, most of your time down below is spent sitting or lying down. Scores of small boats without standing headroom have crossed oceans, and many have even circumnavigated. As the British yacht designer, Uffa Fox, pointed out, if you want standing headroom, there’s plenty on deck.
