Bebel, Heinrich (Ingstetten, Württemberg, 1472-1518, Tübingen), a peasant's son, became a professor at Tübingen in 1497. He was crowned poet (gekrönter Dichter) by Maximilian I in 1501. Bebel was a skilled Latinist and the principal German exponent of the ‘Facetie’ (see Fazetie), a form in which he displayed wit, satirical edge, and elegant form. His collections bear the titles Libri facetiarum iucundissimi (1512) and Novus liber facetiarum (1514).
