"The two analyses of Mr. Z" is, in essence, a critique of
traditional psychoanalytic techniques. Kohut believed that
psychoanalysis lacked empathy and presented his critique by
publishing this article, which described two analyses of the same
patient, the first was psychoanalytic, the second was how Kohut
thought that analysis should have progressed.
