Confederate General Henry Heth graduated from West point in
1847. Among the 38 graduating cadets in that year, Heth ranked
38th. Heth's division was among the first Confederate one to make
contact with the Union on the first day of the Battle of
Gettysburg. Heth's division was the leading group of A. P. Hills
lll Corps. Heth encountered 3,000 mounted Union infantry men and
was forced to retreat.Additionally, Heth served at the battles of
Chancellorsville and at the Siege of Petersburg. As an aside, Heth
was a cousin of Confederate General George Pickett.
