To select an item in a menu, on the desktop or within an application in order to copy, move, delete, mark or launch it. Highlighting is typically accomplished by pointing to the object with the mouse and clicking the left mouse button. See Win Highlighting items and highlight bar.

Highlights
The color and shading of highlighted items depends on the OS: Windows XP (top), Windows 7 (middle) and Mac (bottom).

1. Whitest area of an image, such as a halftone print area with the smallest or the least number of dots, or the whitest area of a continuous-tone original.

2. Call attention to an object by concentrating light on it.

3. Call attention to a printed image through some graphic device such as an arrow, aburst ajohnson box or a bullet.
