Historically informed performance arose in the 1970s, and many ensembles focusing on this type of presentation are touring today. Some of the well-known ones include Anonymous 4, Boston Camerata, the Consort of Musicke, English Baroque Soloists, Ex Cathedra, Fretwork, Hesperion XXI, the Hilliard Ensemble, the King's Consort, the Parlay of Instruments, Piffaro, The Sixteen, and the Tavener Consort. The biennial Boston Early Music Festival hosts international ensembles and is known for its presentions of Baroque opera; in addition, many primarily contemporary ensembles will strive to include period instruments and performance practice in some of their early music performances.
