Howard Lindsay

 

(born March 29, 1889, Waterford, N.Y., U.S. — died Feb. 11, 1968, New York, N.Y.) U.S. playwright, actor, and producer known for his collaboration with Russel Crouse (1893 – 1966). Lindsay began his career as an actor, director, and playwright, and Crouse was a journalist before they were paired by producer Vinton Freedley to write librettos for the successful Cole Porter musicals Anything Goes (1934) and Red, Hot and Blue (1936). Their most popular play, Life with Father (1939), ran for over seven years and starred Lindsay as Father. They produced Arsenic and Old Lace (1940) and later wrote librettos for such musicals as The Sound of Music (1959). In 1946 the pair won the Pulitzer Prize in drama for State of the Union (1945), a satire of American politics.

1959The Sound of Music. This musical about the Austrian Von Trapp family is the last collaboration between Rodgers and Hammerstein. Criticized as overly sentimental, the play nevertheless becomes a major popular success, running for 1,443 performances and achieving cult status in the wake of the 1965 film version.

Howard Lindsay (29 March 1889 - 11 February 1968) was an American theatrical producer, playwright, librettist, director and actor. He is best known for his writing work as part of the collaboration of Lindsay and Crouse, and for his performance, with his wife Dorothy Stickney, in the long-running play Life with Father.

Biography

Lindsay was born Herman S. Nelke Waterford, New York, and graduated from Boston Latin School in 1907.

The 1957 Rodgers and Hammerstein television musical, Cinderella, recently revived by PBS, featured Lindsay and Stickney playing the roles of the King and Queen, one of the few times a Lindsay performance has been captured on film.

Together with Russel Crouse, Lindsay won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the 1946 play State of the Union, which was adapted into a film directed by Frank Capra two years later. In 1960, the team won a Tony Award for Best Musical for The Sound of Music. Their last collaboration was Mr. President with Irving Berlin in 1962.
