The Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1949 was Stafford Cripps. He
had taken over the position in 1947 from Hugh Dalton. Cripps was
succeeded by Hugh Gaitskell in 1950.

When Hugh Gaitskell died in January 1963, George Brown took over
as temporary leader until Harold Wilson was appointed as leader the
following month. When Harold Wilson became Prime Minister the
following year, George Brown became his deputy.
