(b Stockholm, 1 May 1872; d Falun, 8 May 1960). Swedish composer. He studied at the Stockholm Conservatory (1887-91) and privately with Lindegren, also training as a painter. Thereafter he worked as a choirmaster and Director Musices at Uppsala University (1910-39). His music is distinguished by orchestral subtlety and a painterly exploitation of harmony and timbre. It is almost all programmatic, often seeking to evoke the landscapes and seascapes of southern Sweden (e.g. Midsummer Vigil, 1903; Shepherd-girl's Dance, 1923). His main works include five symphonies, much choral music and songs.
