Biography

Long Beach, CA's Humpers were formed by Scott "Deluxe" Drake and Jeff Fieldhouse, guitarists for the Suicide Kings. Drake gave up the guitar for the group and concentrated on screaming lead vocals. The Humpers were first revered not in the group's native California but, oddly, in Yugoslavia, where its first and extremely rare LP My Machine was released.

Whereas the Suicide Kings' sound borrowed heavily from the 1970s (Heartbreakers, Rolling Stones, New York Dolls, Ramones), the Humpers punked the mix up a bit with a more direct and sonic edge reminiscent of Cleveland groups the Dead Boys and the Pagans.

Bassist Jaybird Blake left the group after recording half of the tracks for 1994's Journey to the Center of Your Wallet, and was more than capably replaced by Mitch Cartwright. Guitarist Jeff Fieldhouse also left the group, leaving sole guitar duties to Billy Burks. After two LPs for indie Sympathy for the Record Industry, the Humpers were signed to Caroline. ~ Matt Carlson, All Music Guide

The Humpers were a garage punk band formed in 1989 led by Scott "Deluxe" Drake, formerly of The Suicide Kings. Despite being based out of Long Beach, California, they first won acclaim in Yugoslavia, where their debut EP, My Machine (which is now extremely rare), was released.[1] They released two full-lengths for Sympathy for the Record Industry which were highly praised and three for Caroline/Epitaph. The Humpers, along with label mates The Lazy Cowgirls, The Red Aunts,Trash Can School and Clawhammer, were part of a "garage punk renaissance" which hit Los Angeles in the early 1990s. Rabid fans and packed, punk-friendly clubs such as Raji's in Hollywood and Bogart's in Long Beach helped lay the foundation for their success. Most of their appeal lay in the driving sonic force of guitarist Jeff Fieldhouse as well as the blistering vocals of Drake. Unfortunately, after Fieldhouse's departure at their peak in 1995 the Humpers were never able to regain their early success. The addition of one Mark 'Anarchy' Lee to replace Fieldhouse did not do much to help the band and their remaining releases for Epitaph records slipped by with little notice.
