Ranked as the eighth-deadliest to hit the US mainland, Hurricane
Audrey was a Category 3 upon landfall, with sustained winds of 125
mph (205 km/h). She maintained her eye for 60 miles inland, then
dramatically weakened into an extratropical cyclone. However, the
system re-intensified near Tennessee, and moved toward Lake Huron.
Jamestown, New York reported wind gusts of up to 100 mph (155
km/h). The name "Audrey" was soon retired and will never be used
again to name a hurricane.
