The EPU provides emergency hydraulic and electrical power to essential systems. It does this using a mixture of bleed air (from the engine turbine section) and/or hydrazine. Hydrazine has no smell and is extremely carcinogenic. So, the Hydrazine used has ammonia added to it to make it detectable by scent. This way technicians can easily identify a leak, know that they have been exposed, evacuate the area and quarantine themselves.
