The medical term "hyperglycemia" is the term used to describe an abnormally high glucose (sugar) count in the blood.

(Hyper- = increase of; glycerol/glycemic/glucose = sugar; -emia = of or pertaining to the blood.)

Additional Information:

Hyperglycemia can be a symptom of various conditions such as diabetes mellitus, stress on the body systems after major organ damage (heart attack or stroke), sepsis (systemic reaction to severe infection), pre-diabetes, insulin resistance and it can also be a side effect of the use of some drugs, such as steroids.

Hypoglycemia is the opposite, when blood glucose levels are lower than ideal.

(Hypo- = under, below, beneath, deficient.)

The fish began undergoing insulin shock. As the insulin was absorbed into the bloodstream through the gills, it opened up more glucose pathways in the fish's cell walls, causing glucose levels in the blood stream to drop. This reduced the amount of glucose available for the brain, leading to tremors, coma and eventual death.

== == Absolutely! The "diabetic diet" is exactly what we should all be eating. It is all about choosing healthy foods and controlling portions. Yes, but only to a degree. Diabetics have to be so careful with sugar and so should the rest of us. The average person consumes over 15 lbs., of sugar per year and it keeps going up, thus, diabetes is soaring. My mother was a diabetic and so here is what can be done for you: 3 1/2 ounces of meat per meal lots of veggies (green in particular) Fruit (you can eat any type of fruit and are not restricted like a diabetic) Papayas are great for the digestion and Mango good for bowel movements If you are busy be sure you get some protein in you. Pack a peanut butter sandwich with you and if you like, you could put a little honey on it as well. You have protein and also the energy of the honey. Back right off of sweets, but treat yourself once or twice weekly (just a small piece of cake, pie, etc.) Most of us simply over indulge at the best of times. Watch your pasta and bread intake It amazes me that some people (especially women) don't realize that yeast is often the cause for bloating and weight gain. If you watch your intake of yeast (read your labels) you will drop weight much quicker than by practically starving yourself. If you should go on a no-yeast diet be sure you don't stay on it longer than 2 months and slowly introduce SOME yeast back into your system. Drink 8 - 10 glasses of water a day, but no more. Our bodies are made up of 98% water and like not watering a plant, if we don't drink water we don't flush out some vital organs and our skin dries up.
