German Literature Companion:

Illuminatenorden

Illuminatenorden, a society of freemason-like character, founded in 1776 by A. Weishaupt of Ingolstadt. Strongly anti-Jesuit, it was suppressed in 1784 by the Elector Karl Theodor of Bavaria at the instance of the Society of Jesus. Among its members at various times were Duke Karl August of Saxe-Weimar, J. G. Herder, J. H. Pestalozzi, and A. von Knigge.
