During the land battles, that tactic worked well, there was NO
place for the Japanese to retreat to, on an island. At sea however,
the Japanese had the overwhelming firepower and skill to use it.
Only after the US out numbered the Japanese Navy in Aircraft
Carriers, Airplanes, Battleships, Cruisers, Destroyers, and
Submarines, did the US Navy overwhelm the Imperial Navy with
firepower.
