import substitution

Geography Dictionary: import substitution

A strategy for economic development which encourages industrial growth within a nation in order to reduce imports of manufactures, save foreign exchange, provide jobs, and reduce dependency. The United Nations Commission for Latin America promoted import substitution policies in the 1960s, but they were not successful, and such policies have been replaced by strategies grounded on export-led industrialization.
