industrial inertia

Geography Dictionary: industrial inertia

The survival of an industry in an area even though the factors which led to its location there no longer apply. It is often advisable to update and expand a factory rather than to relocate because of existing agglomeration economies and external economies and because of the difficulty of moving a skilled labour force. ‘Lakeland’ crayons are still made in the English Lake District, although they no longer use the local graphite.
