Biography

The bouncy, toe-tapping keyboards of Industry's "State of the Nation" seemed to be tailor-made for American Bandstand in the early '80s; however, the song's stinging anti-war lyrics made the track thought-provoking as well as catchy. "State of the Nation" wasn't Industry's only contribution to the pop world, but they aren't remembered for anything else. Comprised of Jon Carin (synthesizer/keyboards/vocals), Mercury Caronia (synthesizer/percussion/drums), Rudy Perrone (guitar/bass/vocals), and Brian Unger (guitar/vocals), Industry formed in New York. In 1983, the group released an EP; it was followed by a full-length album, Stranger to Stranger, on Capitol Records in 1984. "State of the Nation" was a hit in dance clubs, especially in Asia. Stranger to Stranger was Industry's only LP.

During the band's Fab Four-esque popularity in the Philippines, rumors flew that most of the group perished in a plane crash, but it was never confirmed. On July 13, 1985, Carin played keyboards for Bryan Ferry at Live Aid. Carin has also worked with Pink Floyd, David Gilmour, Roger Daltrey, Pete Townsend, the Psychedelic Furs, and Corey Hart. In 1998, Carin recorded Meat the Honky with Honky Tonk, a band formed by former Love Spit Love guitarist Richard Fortus. Carin was also Roger Waters' keyboardist for his 1999 tour. ~ Michael Sutton, All Music Guide

Industry was a pop music band formed in New York which recorded only three albums; Stranger to Stranger (1984) being the most popular.[1] Lets get the facts about the band industry in order now and for the record... Industry, originally named, "Industrial Complex", otherwise known as, "Industry", was not soley invented by Mercury Caronia, tapes do exist from 1978 and before. As Mercury and Andrew began working with tape loops, synths, innovative guitaring into various methods of recording, they gave birth to the original sound known as the artistry of , "Industry". This was the start of a new sound in music not yet heard. Thanks to Tim Kelly (Metro Records) the 1st Industry album was released. It has since become a collectors item. Andrew Geyer 1981 gone....Mercury joined forces with guitarist/songman Brian Unger and along with the help of Rudy Perrone (guitarist/Cathedral) and Jon Carin (keyboard/vocalist). Mercury and Brian released TURNING TO LIGHT...the 2nd album by INDUSTRY. This was the record that got CAPITAL RECORDS interested in signing the band. The rest is history!

Industry was founded in the late 1970s by Andrew P Geyer[2]. (musician, guitarist, composer and studio engineer) and released with Mercury Caronia in 1978 with Sean Kelly on some vocals, with rather experimental electronic music, odd time signatures, tape loops analog recording on skydisc records. Later with the addition of Brian Unger and new lead singer Jon Carin and Rudy Perrone (who was previously in a progressive rock band called Cathedral,) with Mercury, they created a more pop-oriented sound and released a Mini-LP and a full-length album.

Their best known single, the anti-militarist "State of the Nation", broke through the European charts between 1983 and 1984, earning them a place as support for acts like Billy Idol, Talk Talk and INXS.

"State of the Nation" was followed less successfully by a second single from the same album, "Still of the Night".

After the group split, Carin started a successful session-man career, becoming a permanent member of the Pink Floyd live band and co-writing Pink Floyd's hit single "Learning to Fly". Unger and Perrone went on to form their own bands.
