Disproportionate opportunities or rewards for different individuals or groups the OECD countries in society. The increase in income inequality within the member states of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development since the mid-1970s has been attributed to reductions in income tax, the deregulation of capital and labour markets, rapid technological change, and globalization.

As income inequalities have increased, so have spatial variations in income; within the UK, mean household incomes in Greater London are 50% higher than in the North region, but the biggest income inequalities occur at postcode level. Some argue that inequality is good for the economy, citing high income taxes and over-regulation as disincentives to initiative; others that large disparities in income are economically inefficient, and potentially politically damaging.

Geographers are concerned with the spatial expression of inequality, whether it relates to gender, social class, or ethnicity, and study its causes (for example, See cumulative causation), its consequences, such as migration from poorer to richer regions (Mezzogiorno to northern Italy, ‘South’ to ‘North’), and the remedial measures taken by governments to redress inequality. See territorial justice.

In mathematics, a statement of an order relationship — greater than, greater than or equal to, less than, or less than or equal to — between two numbers or algebraic expressions. Inequalities can be posed either as questions, much like equations, and solved by similar techniques, or as statements of fact in the form of theorems. For example, the triangle inequality states that the sum of the lengths of any two sides of a triangle is greater than or equal to the length of the remaining side. Mathematical analysis relies on many such inequalities (e.g., the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality) in the proofs of its most important theorems.

inequality, in mathematics, statement that a mathematical expression is less than or greater than some other expression; an inequality is not as specific as an equation, but it does contain information about the expressions involved. The symbols < (less than), > (greater than), ≤ (less than or equal to), and ≥ (greater than or equal to) are used in place of the equals sign in expressions of inequalities. As in the case of equations, inequalities can be transformed in various ways. The direction of the inequality remains unchanged if some number is added to both sides or subtracted from both sides or if both sides are multiplied or divided by some positive number; e.g., subtracting 10 from both sides of the inequality x < 8 gives x − 10 < −2, and multiplying the inequality by 2 gives 2x < 16. Multiplication or division by a negative number reverses the sign of the inequality; e.g., if −2x < 8, then dividing both sides by −2 results in the inequality x > −4.
