Decomposers are "nature's recyclers." They return basic chemicals to the environment for other living things to reuse. For example, the leaves of many trees die in autumn and drop to the ground. Decomposing bacteria spend the next months breaking down the chemicals in the dead leaves. The broken-down chemicals mix with the soil and can then be absorbed by the roots of nearby plants.

Another type of recycling bacteria, called nitrogen-fixing bacteria, help plants survive. Nitrogen-fixing bacteria live in the soil and in swellings on the roots of certain plants, such as peanut, pea, and soybean. These helpful bacteria convert nitrogen gas from the air into nitrogen products that plants need to grow. On their own, plants cannot use nitrogen present in the air. Therefore, nitrogen-fixing bacteria are vital to the plants' survival.

The Hope diamond was discovered in the Golconda diamond mines of southern India. It came to be known as the Tavernier Blue or the French Blue due to its intense blue color.

Woolworth's lunch counter, Greensboro, North Carolina is where the protests of the civil rights movement took place. On February 1, 1960, four African American students from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical College sat at this "whites only" lunch counter, they asked to be served, and, when they were not, refused to leave. The sit-in and boycott of the store lasted six months and was the focus of national publicity.

The Wright Brothers first took off in their plane at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. It

was December 17, 1903.and the flight lasted 12 seconds.

President John F. Kennedy was buried in Arlington National Cemetery on November 25, 1963. An eternal flame stands there as a memorial to him and his presidency.

The Korean War Veterans Memorial was authorized on Oct. 28, 1986 "…to honor members of the United States Armed Forces who served in the Korean War." It is made up of 19 stainless steel statues representing a squad on patrol.

The White House is home of the President of the United States and the seat of the Executive Branch of our Government. President George Washington and Pierre L'Enfant chose this beautiful site. The weather during our visit was perfect for outdoor picture taking.

Situated on the South side of the Tidal Basin, in West Potomac Park, the Jefferson Memorial is one of the cities most picturesque landmarks. This simple circular classical white marble monument has at its center, a 19-foot bronze portrait statue standing on a 6-foot pedestal. Panels are inscribed with excerpts of Jefferson's writing, including one that best sums up the man: "I have sworn upon the alter of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man."

Approximately 3,750 cherry trees are on the Tidal Basin in Washington, DC. Most of the trees are Yoshino Cherry. In 1912, the people of Japan sent 3,020 cherry trees to the United States as a gift of friendship.

Beside a statue of President Franklin Roosevelt at his newly dedicated memorial In Washington is a bronze image of FDR's Scottish terrier Fala. This was done because the man and his dog were virtually inseparable in life, and in public memory they should remain so.

The Washington's used their smokehouse to prepare bacon and ham from their pigs. They used the food for their family and for their guests. Of all the food produced at Mount Vernon, Martha was especially proud of her hams.

After slaughtering and butchering the hogs in December and January, the Mount Vernon slaves smoked the meat over a fire pit to preserve it for the coming year. The meat was smoked, aged, and stored in the smokehouse.

> When the Holocaust started no-one knew just how bad it would get, no-one but Hitler. He was born in Braunau am Inn, a town in the Innviertel region of Upper Austria, on April 20, 1889. At a young age, Hitler was a cynical racist who didn't like the fact that many nationalities lived in Austria.

> From 1933-1945, Hitler literally reigned over the Germany. He used propaganda to perpetrate graphic violence to endeavor the people to be on his side. He never had optimism, tolerance or sympathy for the ghetto or the depressed community. Hitler made the Jews wear a yellow star to make them seem homogeneous to the other people.

> The Jews never thought the Germans would commit the magnitude of atrocities that they did. Hitler was a strong leader who knew what it took to get the Jews killed. Even his soldiers were probably given the least information possible. The Germans just needed to feel that the Jews were inferior and to show their intolerance for them. Hitler was officially in power for 11 years before the Holocaust started to end, the most destructive killing of the Jews lasted for two years.

> The racism between the Jews and Germans was the same as what occurs today. The Germans always had very crude views about the Jews and were taught from a young age to believe and follow these views. If the Jews had been strong enough to find out what Hitler's plan was maybe they could have stopped some of the depravity. Maybe they could have spread the word through journalism about what was happening to their people. There was no real reason for all of the killing just a misunderstanding and the ignorance of not accepting what's different. If it weren't for racism this occurrence would never have happened
