Enclosure that is used to relate information as part of an overall advertising campaign. Inserts can be found in all phases of advertising, such as direct-mail pieces, freestanding inserts in newspapers, extra printed matter in magazines, or package inserts.

In direct mail, inserts work as a part of the selling package and may take the form of informational material as well as return forms, including order forms, to be filled out, and even gift premiums, such as a calendar.

Newspaper inserts are freestanding, preprinted pieces ranging in size from a single card to a 30-page (or more) tabloid.

In magazine advertising, inserts are bound into the pages of the magazine and sold as a form of advertising space in conjunction with an adjoining advertisement; they may take the form of return cards, coupons, recipe booklets, or order forms. Sometimes, advertisers will have to pay an extra charge for the binding, along with the extra charge for the insert. In both newspapers and magazines, printing costs are borne by the advertiser.

Inserts also appear in some packages as redeemable coupons or bounce-back circulars telling about another of the advertiser's products. Additionally, there is a relatively new practice of selling space in packages, similar to the way other advertising space is sold. Inserts enclosed as a result of this type of contracted space are called ride-alongs.
