MPEG is the abbreviation for Moving Picture Expert Group. This is a group of experts from International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that regulate the auto and video compression and transmission standards.

International standards are developed by the working groups of Technical

Committee-88 (TC-88) of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the recognized international body for standards development activities. AWEA is the recognized U.S. industry organization for standards development and maintains contact with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards development activities through the involvement of staff members and industry representatives on TC-88 standards subcommittees. The status of the IEC standards is provided in Table I.

The international symbols used today were developed over time through international consensus by various organizations and committees, such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). These symbols are designed to be universally understood regardless of language or culture.
