1. This heavily used word has extended its meaning from the notion of envelopment or entanglement (it is derived from the Latin word involvere meaning 'to enwrap') to less precise forms of connection, as in What does the work involve? and No other vehicle was involved (in police descriptions of one-vehicle accidents). Resistance to this natural development in meaning belongs to the domain of lost causes.

2. The participial form involving used as a quasi-preposition is often better replaced by a simpler word: A collision took place involving a private motor vehicle and a lorry (use between) / There was no reduction last year in the number of cases involving cruelty to horses (use of).
