Biography

The American success of Japanese actor Sessue Hayakawa naturally spawned several competitors. Chief among them was Jack Yutaka Abbe (sometimes given as plain Jack Abbe), who had actually played Hayakawa's valet in the groundbreaking (and still extant) The Cheat (1915). Abbe co-starred as the Niponese lover opposite Teddy Sampson's heroine in Her American Husband (1918), which was Madame Butterfly by any other name and apparently had more than a hint of miscegenation, and he was Chinese actress Lady Tsen Mei's love interest in Lotus Blossom (1921). He returned to Japan later in the 1920s and became a director. ~ Hans J. Wollstein, All Movie Guide
