(b Hamburg, 8 Feb 1586; d there, 21/22 Oct 1651). German composer, son of Hieronymus Praetorius. An organ pupil of Sweelinck, he was organist of St Petri, Hamburg, from 1603 until his death; Weckmann was among his pupils. He wrote large-scale organ works, chorale settings (1604, 1651) and wedding motets. His brother Johannes (c 1595-1660) was also a Hamburg organist and a composer.
