(b Bordeaux, 27 Sept 1880; d Mont Cemet, 1 Sept 1953). French violinist. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire, graduating in 1896. After an early career as soloist with the Concerts Colonne he toured widely in Europe and made his American début in 1903. In the 1920s and 30s he formed a trio partnership with Casals and Cortot, making notable recordings of Schubert and Beethoven. His playing was distinguished by purity of tone and warmth of expression. In 1943 he founded a competition for violinists and pianists with Marguerite Long.
