James Adair was a trader and author who lived in the eighteenth century. From 1735-1775, he lived among Native American tribes, especially the Chickasaws and Cherokees. His book, History of the American Indians, was published in 1775, with a main hypothesis being that the Indians were directly descended from the Jews.

Adair negotiated peace deals with the various tribes and was known to them as a diplomat. He died in 1783 in N. Carolina.

Completed in 1768, this important chronicle of the Irish-born author's firsthand observations as a trader with the Indians in the South, concerning Indian customs, languages, daily life, and crucial events, is finally published. The account is marred only by Adair's theory that Native Americans are descendants of the ancient Jews.
