James Dillon
(b Glasgow, 29 Oct 1950). Scottish composer. He studied music and linguistics at London University, but was self-taught as a composer. His music, influenced by Ferneyhough and Finnissy, is characterized by wild complexity and extreme instrumental demands. His early works are for solo instruments or small ensembles - ... Once Upon a Time for eight instruments (1980), East 11th St NY 10003 for six percussionists (1982) - but in Uberschreiten for 16 instruments (1986) and his first orchestral score Helle Nacht (1987) he began to extend his techniques to larger forces.
