(ca. 1960-)

James Van Praagh, a Spiritualist medium and author of two best-selling books on his experiences with psychic reality, was born into a Catholic family in Bayside, New York, around 1960. As a youth he attended Sacred Heart School. Responding to his mother's wish that he become a priest, he entered a junior seminary, Eymard Preparatory School in Hyde Park, New York. He stayed only one year, having concluded that neither the priest-hood nor the Roman Catholic Church were for him. He completed his high school years in a public school.

As a child, Van Praagh had a variety of psychic experiences. One in particular stood out. At the age of eight, he had a vision of a giant hand above his bed one evening. He interpreted it as the Hand of God and from that time forward his belief in God never wavered. Also, on the first anniversary of singer Janis Joplin's death he tried to contact her. Sitting before a candle, he called her spirit to manifest and immediately afterward the flame bent in a most unusual manner.

In 1978 Van Praagh left New York to attend San Francisco State University, where he majored in broadcasting. He hoped for a career in Hollywood as a screenwriter. Following his graduation in 1982, he moved to Los Angeles and took a menial job as he began working his way up. A colleague at his workplace invited him to visit Spiritualist medium Brian Hurst, who told him that one day he would also be a medium. He was intrigued enough with the prediction that he began to pick up books on psychic development and find ways to hone his skills. Within a year he was regularly receiving calls from friends and acquaintances asking him for advice.

Within a short time, he was spending so much of his time doing readings for people who valued his talents that he was forced to make a choice to either drop his spiritual work or his plans for a Hollywood career. He chose to continue with his spirit contact and soon emerged as a Spiritualist medium. Over the years he gave private readings, conducted many development classes, and traveled frequently. He founded Spiritual Horizons in Los Angeles to coordinate his activities.

In 1997, Van Praagh took a step upward with the publication of his first book, Talking to Heaven. The book became a best-seller and he became a public personality as a result of the subsequent radio and television appearances. It was followed by a sequel, Reaching to Heaven (1999), which also became a bestseller. Both books recount some of his more successful experiences of spirit contact, discuss the view of the universe they suggest, and offer means for individuals to develop their own clairvoyance and mediumistic abilities.

In the 1995 NBC television series The Other Side, Van Praagh was introduced as the first American medium ever to perform readings on the air, and quickly became the series favorite[citation needed]. Howard Rosenberg, the Los Angeles Times television critic, dubbed Van Praagh's performances "spectacular."

Early life and career

Van Praagh was born in Bayside, New York and is the youngest of four children. Raised Roman Catholic he attended seminary at the age of 14, however he has described himself as experiencing spiritual phenomena from a young age that eventually drew him away from conventional religious practice.

He graduated from San Francisco State University, majoring in Broadcasting and Communications and subsequently moved to Los Angeles. It was there that he first discovered an interest in metaphysics[1] and began working as a medium following a prediction by another medium who suggested it was his destiny.[2]

Van Praagh built his early career performing private readings and quickly graduated to wider audiences with a series of audiotapes, books, and eventually the television appearances that gave him national exposure.

Career as a medium

On an episode of the radio show loveline Van Praagh said his first reading came in 1st grade. He claims to have told his teacher her son got hit by a car, but was Ok and only suffered a broken leg. The teacher told him to sit down, but a few minuites later the principal told her that her son was infact in an accident, and broke a leg.

Van Praagh claims that through his mediumistic abilities he receives messages from spirits and feelings about their presence that provide "detailed evidential proof that a loved one survived death."[2]

In 2002, he hosted his own daytime talk show "Beyond with Van Praagh",[3] in which he gave readings to audience members.

His work continued to inspire his own brand of successful television shows with CBS and produced the mini series "Living With The Dead", "The Dead Will Tell" and the CBS drama "Ghost Whisperer".

Van Praagh also hosts regular seminars and workshops to assist others in developing spiritual awareness.

Personal life

On the Larry King Live episode on May 26, 2009, it was revealed that Van Praagh is in a same-sex marriage.

Criticism

Critics of Van Praagh accuse him of using the mentalism technique of cold reading to simulate psychic powers.[4][5] They point to several incidents in which Van Praagh's claims have been wrong, such as when he suggested to the parents of the abducted Shawn Hornbeck that the boy's body might be found in a railroad car.[6] Hornbeck was found alive four years later, having been abducted but not killed, and the kidnapper was not a railroad plant worker as Van Praagh had suggested.[7] Van Praagh has responded by asserting that his messages are often vague and hard to interpret and sometimes he mistakes their meaning.
